Blazing the Trail for the Integration of Secular Psychology & Christian Faith:
A brief overview of the Network of Christian Counselors
The Network of Christian Counselors was founded in 1976, by Dr. Harold Wahking who understood that the essential tools of a professional counselor can only go so far in the therapeutic process.
Dr. Wahking maintained that our Christian faith holds many insights into how we solve our personal and relational problems. He believed that the power of God working through us can bring about a healing and transformation in our lives, thus creating a spiritual path for growth in our giftings and talents. God’s power at work in our lives through any situation can bring love, joy, restoration, and peace. By inviting Him into our everyday lives and challenges, we honor Him and free ourselves from hurt and bondage.
Dr. Wahking was joined by Dr. Gloria Willcox who shared his vision for Christian Counseling. Together they established church-based counseling ministries throughout Pinellas County, FL to support church leadership. Counselors of the Network established themselves in local church settings and offered professional Christian counseling to address the needs of the hurting, while encouraging personal, emotional, and spiritual growth within the body of Christ.
The Network of Christian Counselors specialize in offering an integration of psychology and clinical counseling skills within a framework of a Judeo – Christian world view to address the issues of life.
Although Dr. Wahking and Dr. Wilcox have gone home to Jesus, their legacy lives on for our professional counselors who have chosen to walk in the path they have blazed before us. Our founders, Wahking and Wilcox were brilliant individuals, God fearing, loving, and life-changing counselors. The world is a better place because of their impact through the Network of Christian Counselors and their own church-based practices where they served the hurting and the broken for nearly 40 years.
Both Dr. Willcox and Dr. Wahking authored several books and continuing education curriculum including, Forgiveness in Christian Psychotherapy, A Christian Guide to Personal Growth, Enhancing Your Brain to Be More Christ Like, The Unconscious in Spirituality and Christian Psychotherapy, Fulfilled Sexuality, and much more.
Dr. Willcox left us with her well respected work on Feelings, Converting Negatives to Positives, and the Feelings Wheel that is widely used by many clinicians to this day.
Fast forward a quarter of a century to 2010 when the Network of Christian Counseling expanded its membership reach to all mental health counselors who seek to incorporate a Judeo-Christian biblical worldview within the framework of psychotherapy and who conduct their practices outside of the church. Since then, our membership has expanded to include licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, life coaches, pastors, and lay ministers, all of whom are invested personally and professionally in mental health, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual growth.
Core Values
Our membership is defined by core values instituted by our founders and embraced by all to this day. From the principles of our faith, and the word of God that will never pass away (Matt 24:35), we commit to these core values in our approach to our professional conduct and service to others.
We commit to conduct ourselves in Christlikeness, authenticity, and accountability.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism.
We challenge ourselves to our own personal growth.
We seek to answer God’s calling for contributed ministry beyond our professional roles in service to others.
We embrace Koinonia fellowship, where we can enjoy the richness of coming together in one accord in the spirit of our faith for a higher good.
Our Mission
The Network of Christian Counselors Association is here for you. Our mission is to educate, encourage, and equip Christian Counselors and related professions in the care of a hurting world.
Our members meet up on the 2nd Monday of each month from 9am – 12pm, September through May, for a professional colloquium with continuing education credits awarded for attendance and participation. These colloquiums are educational, insightful, interactive, and prayerful. We provide topics of interest that relate to the field of psychology and mental health care and offer best practices treatment approaches integrated with the life changing power of our faith. We currently meet at Seminole United Methodist Church.
We invite you to join us in membership, get a discount on CEUs, or be our guest at our next professional colloquium!
