“Beyond the Shadows: Transforming Pain Through a Contemporary Understanding of Suicidal Risk and Compassion-Centered Healing”
We invite you to explore a critical topic that deeply affects active-duty military, veterans, first responders, frontline workers, and individuals in distress. Suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and completed suicides have increased by approximately 36% nationwide over the past 20 years.
This month’s professional colloquium with Dr. Diego Hernandez will focus on the complexities of these issues, which, like trauma work, carry significant emotional weight for therapists. Together, we will explore topics such as suicidal ideation, compassionate care, the relationship between suicide and sense of self, event-based interventions, and emerging insights from neuroscience within the framework of Critical Memory Integration (CMI).
Our goal is to provide a contemporary understanding of suicidal thoughts and offer a framework that empowers both therapists and clients to embrace their full emotional experience—highlighting the need for meaningful connection and recognition during times of distress.
What you can expect to gain from this Professional Colloquium:
1. Discuss Current Demographics and Suicide Risks by reviewing demographic trends and clinical presentations related to suicide risk.
2. Understanding Suicidal Ideation by examining how suicidal thoughts evolve—from expressions of pain to perceived solutions for that pain.
3. Explore Treatment Strategies for Suicidal Thinking through therapeutic interventions that address the underlying needs beneath suicidal thoughts.
4. Cultivating Self-Compassion for Therapist and Client by learning how to foster self-compassion as a key element in healing for both clients and therapists.
